Christmas day message by Member of Parliament for Bagan

Image
I would like to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and to share with all Malaysians that Jesus Christ's message of peace, love and freedom is still dear to my heart. For me, the spirit of truth, justice, equal opportunity and salvation from sin is not merely an ideal but something we must strive for. Having said that, it is sad to note that despite my last year's Christmas message – calling on the federal government to stop intimidating the Catholic weekly newspaper 'Herald' by demanding the publication to drop the use of the word "Allah" in its Malay language section – is still not heeded. Despite the Federal Constitution guaranteeing freedom of expression and freedom of worship for all including non-Muslims, the Barisan Nasional government still refused to stop its suppression of press freedom and people's fundamental human rights.Despite the Federal Constitution guaranteeing freedom of expression and freedom of worship for all including non-Muslims, the Ba...

Penang to boost Georgetown with city status starting from 1 Jan 2009

Penang is pushing to boost its economy further by turning its state capital into an iconic global city, banking on its new status as a Unesco World Heritage Site. Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng told The Malaysian Insider the state will start by reviving the long-forgotten tradition to mark George Town’s City Day on Jan 1. It is relying on a 1957 conferment of city status from Britain’s Queen Elizabeth II, as the federal government has not officially proclaimed it a city. This celebration is likely to give the state government another headache, similar to the recent row over its multilingual road signs. But the real pain is how to make Georgetown into a city worth living in again. And by extension, a brand worth investing in. In his speeches around the world, Lim has made clear he wants Georgetown to be “an international city that is a location of choice for investors, a destination of choice for tourists and a habitat of choice for those who desire sustainable living.” Recently, he convin...

Stop the politicking & get back to work, police told

The police were told to stop politicking and work on their crime prevention efforts effectively. Right now, we noticed that the police force is focusing its entire workforce in helping Umno to curb opposition political activities which are deemed to anger Umno. Even when an NGO called JERIT organised its cycling tour around the nation, the police had send out almost half of its workforce to curb this event. Why do they want to curb JERIT's activities, what crime have they committed so far? Did they carry weapons and harm any passer bys or the public? When manning the road blocks in order to detain the JERIT cyclist, these policemen were holding semi-automatic machineguns and other weapons as well. Looks like the police are terrorising the people and not protecting the people from the increasing crime spree nowadays. They are just too busy entertaining to a lots of Umno's request to curb the influence of the opposition parties.

HK system on hillside developments should be implemented here

We applaud the call by Penang Chief Minister and DAP Secretary-General Lim Guan Eng that the federal government should come out with geotechnical engineering unit similar to that of the Hong Kong Geotechnical Engineering Office to ensure the safety of hillside developments. The Hong Kong government had established a very effective yet powerful Geotechnical Engineering Office after the landslides in the 1970s killed hundreds of people, to monitor the developments of hillside housing there. According to Guan Eng, the existing hillside developments require constant maintenance, monitoring and management in every aspect. Therefore, a very special department or office is required to have such matters deal with in a professional manner. Guan Eng also explained that the Hong Kong Geotechnical Engineering Office had proved successful in preventing further deaths and incidents via four simple and effective moves i.e. checking on new slopes, planning land usage, maintaining and upgrading slopes ...
