Guan Eng: Build LCCT in Penang state

Penang Chief Minister and DAP Secretary-General Lim Guan Eng wants the Ministry of Transport to urgently consider the state's proposal to build a low-cost carrier terminal (LCCT).

He reiterated that building a LCCT in Penang was important to stimulate the economy, especially in the tourism sector. "We have an ideal location for the purpose, just next to the Bayan Lepas International Airport. I have met and discussed the matter with Transport Minister Datuk Ong Tee Kiat in Parliament," he told reporters today.

Lim stressed that at a time when the economy was suffering due to the global economic meltdown, tourism could be the sector that can contribute positively towards revenue of the state.

Earlier Lim launched an anti-poverty partner scheme, an initiative by the state government with support from IJM Corporation Berhad, aimed at eradicating poverty in the state.

"As I have said before, I want Penang to become the first state to succeed in eliminating poverty among the hardcore poor. To achieve that goal, I urge corporate bodies and individuals who have the capacity to do their part in making the programme a success," he said - Agencies
