Wesak Day Message by Secretary-General Lim Guan Eng

Image
In the spirit of peace and tranquility, I wish a very happy Wesak day to all Buddhists in Malaysia. On this auspices day, we are reminded of the teachings of Lord Buddha who among other things has preached enlightenment and tolerance. The struggle for understanding and tolerance, especially religious and racial tolerance, among Malaysians may not be an easy task but it is also not impossible. What we need is a very strong political will from those who are in the position of power, as well as the support from the people. When Minister in the Prime Minister's Department formed the Inter-Fatih Committee, it was abandoned due to opposition from extremist groups such as Perkasa and those within UMNO. Will Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak allow its establishment to demonstrate his commitment to 1Malaysia is not just an empty slogan. An interfaith dialogue, whether in a form or a council or a certain body, is never meant to undermine or to surpass any faith or religion. It is...

Penang Speaker's Square

Image
It's a bold step forward towards freedom of speech. In an unprecedented move, the Penang government will launch a "Speaker's Square" at the Esplanade for the public to air their views. The square will be located at the Millennium Square concrete stage near the seafront. It is expected to draw social activists and members of non-governmental organisations to take the limelight and speak their mind. Penang Local government and Traffic Management Committee chairman Chow Kon Yeow said the public would be allowed to speak whatever they hold to be important every Wednesday and Sunday from 6pm to 9pm from May 9. “It is for spontaneous demonstration of free speech as anyone can turn up unannounced and talk. Of course, you will have to wait until the person on the stage has finished before you go up to talk," said Chow. “There will be no PA system. So, those who wish to speak will have to bring their own equipment,” Chow told the press . “Although our aim is ...

Penang pushes for freedom of information laws

Image
Penang is waiting to see if Selangor is successful in enacting the Freedom of Information Act (FOI) as its own state legal adviser has hampered it, saying it is “unconstitutional”. Penang Chief Minister and DAP Secretary-General Lim Guan Eng (picture) today repeated his call for freedom of information to mark World Press Freedom Day tomorrow. “In Penang, the state legal adviser has objected to the Penang state government’s intention to enact a FOI on the grounds that it is unconstitutional,” he said in a statement. He said the legal adviser’s opinion is that information is under the federal list of the federal Constitution and not within the jurisdiction of the state government. “The state government is closely following the efforts by the Selangor state government to enact the FOI and should this be successful will then enact a similar law in the Penang State Assembly,” he said. Lim lamented that DAP as well as other interested parties had long called for the abolis...

Act on electoral list discrepancies, Guan Eng tells Election Commission

Image
Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng has expressed concern over inconsistencies between the number of voters registered by the Election Commission (EC) and the number of residents recorded iin certain areas. The DAP secretary-general said his office has detected that there are, in two instances, more voters than the total residents recorded by the National Registration Department (NRD). “You cannot have more voters than residents,” Lim told reporters yesterday, urging the EC to clarify and act on the “phantom voters” it had recorded. He cited EC figures of 1,600 Indian voters in Terengganu, even though the NRD has recorded only 1,441 Indian residents there. In another instance, the EC stipulated there are 116,907 Malay voters in Sabah when only 115,349 Malays were recorded by the NRD as residents in the state. He said the anomaly was spotted after the DAP checked on electoral data released by the EC, which was published in The Edge recently. “Why is the EC not hiring a ‘ghost-buster’ to ...
