Guan Eng: Penang has eradicated hardcore poverty

Penang has become the first state in the country to eradicate hardcore poverty by arranging financial aid and economic activities for all 726 households registered under the hardcore poor category. Chief Minister and DAP Secretary-General Lim Guan Eng said the initiative was successful partly because of the support of the private sector and social groups who chipped in to aggressively alleviate the hardships of the poor. "Even though it is difficult, including facing bankruptcy, I am more willing to have the state becoming bankrupt to help the poor and be burdened than to be bankrupted by corruption," he said today. The implementation mechanism, overseen by the Welfare Department, consists mainly of funding affected families to ensure their incomes are topped up such that they get at least RM500 every month. The department even helped some individuals set up bank accounts to receive the funds. Lim said checking the state's poverty rate was one of the first things that he ...

Right time to reward senior citizens

Penang Government’s move to reward senior citizens aged 60 and above for their contributions to the state will help those affected by the economic slowdown. Penang Senior Citizens Association president Lawrence Cheah said senior citizens appreciated the gesture. “The senior citizens have, and are still contributing to the state, and they deserve such a reward from the state government. “The timing is appropriate as well, with the economic slowdown affecting so many people including the senior citizens,’’ he said yesterday. Chief Minister and DAP Secretary-General Lim Guan Eng had announced during Pakatan Rakyat’s first anniversary gathering at the Esplanade on Saturday night that all assemblymen and MPs had been instructed to reach out to senior citizens in their respective constituencies. They will collect data on the senior citizens and define the form of contributions. During the same event, Penang Health, Welfare and Caring Society Committee chairman Phee Boon Poh said that to be e...

MPSP to look into creating more parking lots

Seberang Prai Municipal Council (MPSP) will soon conduct a study to create parking lots for cars along the bustling Jalan Raja Uda, Butterworth, Penang, to cater to the growing number of vehicles in the area. Chief Minister and DAP Secretary-General Lim Guan Eng said many motorists were forced to double park, especially outside the Apollo market, as there was not a single car parking lot available in the area. “Many of these motorists have been slapped with summonses by the police for obstructing traffic flow. “We do not blame the police for carrying out their duties but we appeal to them to be a little considerate towards the residents as there are no proper parking facilities for now,” he said after visiting the market recently. Also present were Penang DAP Deputy Chairman and Bagan Jermal assemblyman Lim Hock Seng and council president Farizan Darus. DAP Bagan Jermal Branch Chairman and Sungai Puyu assemblyman Phee Boon Poh Phee said the council did not create any parking lot throug...

Guan Eng may bar NST from covering his functions

Penang Chief Minister and DAP Secretary-General Lim Guan Eng said he would consider barring New Straits Times (NST) from covering his press conferences or functions in response to articles in the newspaper which he alleged were slanderous and false. He said he was willing to accept criticisms but not statements with elements of slander and certain agenda intended to disparage him and the state government. "In the last election they also wrote very bad about us, we also took it. "With or without NST we survive all the time. We urged the people of Penang, if they want to read the truth about Penang don't buy NST," he told reporters after visiting the Relau Community Park today. "The Penang government will not bow to NST but only heed the people," Lim said. "NST must adapt themselves to the new situation. They cannot force the state government to follow what they say, not like before," he added. Lim made these remarks when asked to comment on an arti...

Kerajaan pemberontak Umno negeri merampas bangunan DUN Perak
